A 5K finish time, recorded with a tap

How to time a 5K in four steps

1

Add your runners

Create the event and paste in the start list, or let runners register themselves. Printable bib sheets come free.

2

Start the clock

Open the timer on any phone at the finish line and press start when the gun goes. Everything runs in the browser.

3

Tap each finisher

One volunteer taps a name or bib number per finisher. Times are stored to the millisecond, laps included.

4

Share the results

The public results page is live immediately: leaderboard, splits and finish times, no login needed to view.

Cheaper than chip timing

Chip timing for a club 5K costs hundreds per race. BeOnTimer costs nothing and needs no hardware beyond the phone in your pocket.

Faster than a stopwatch

No more shouting times at someone with a clipboard. Every tap is matched to a runner, so the results are ready before people finish stretching.

Results your runners can share

Each race gets its own public page with the full leaderboard — the link works on any phone, for anyone, forever.

5K timing questions

Is this 5K race timer really free?

Yes. No subscription, no per-runner fee, no credit system. Create an account and time as many races as you want.

Do I need chip timing equipment?

No. One volunteer with a phone taps each runner across the line; the software does the rest. That covers club races and time trials where chip timing is overkill.

How many runners can I time?

Up to about 30 runners per event — the size where chip timing is too expensive and a stopwatch is too slow.

Can runners see their own time afterwards?

Every event gets a public results page with the leaderboard, lap times and finish times. Share the link; no account needed to view it.

Does it work for 10K, marathon or triathlon?

Yes. The timer is distance- and sport-agnostic: 10K, marathon training runs, cycling time trials, swimming and triathlon tests all work the same way.

Your next 5K, timed properly

Set the event up in a couple of minutes and hand the phone to a volunteer. Free, in the browser, for as many races as your club runs.
